Shane Drummond - Put Yourself in the Photograph

Photography enthusiasts of all ages from beginner to expert who love to tell stories with photography should take this masterclass

Think of a selfie. Note that it differs greatly from a photographic self-portrait.

A selfie is superficial and is intended to be immediate; to commemorate an event, a place,

a status or achievement. Most selfies don't reveal anything about a person.

They are designed to be consumed on social media.

Now, think of a self-portrait which is deeper in its exploration, and much more vulnerable in what it can reveal.

Take a self-portrait without being fully in it or at all.

Who are you?

What makes you unique?

What about your life, your actions, your views, the environment you find yourself in is unique to you?

What would you like to share about yourself to others?

If you choose not to reveal something, can a photograph successfully conceal it?

Answer these questions in your photographic assignment,

“This is YOU: Selfie-Portrait."

Tip: The more photographs on a theme you take, the greater the possibility to be surprised by what might show up. Feel free to take many photographs, from many viewpoints and select 2 -3 down to the essence. Look at them individually then as a whole, the way a director might look at a scene to create a feeling then choose a few that best support a theme. Look for the common denominator or look for a photograph that pulls away from the theme or one that defies what you are trying to describe.

Preferable format: jpeg

Email your shots to jon.silveira@theknolwedgeproject.org.  Images will be posted on the TKP's "In the Picture" gallery one week after you send them.  He may be working and need time to review and comment.
